art:berlin - Social Change - Berlin's East between Alexanderplatz and Rosenthaler Platz

Incentive

The construction of the Volksbühne theater in 1913 at the gates of the medieval bourgeois city gave the neglected poor quarter Scheunenviertel a new urban significance. The new building for workers' culture moved this neighborhood close to the more important, economically vibrant life around the still disorderly Alexanderplatz. With the beginning of the Weimar Republic, the task was to design the inner city east. From here, the competition in 1929 provided new architectural images for the growing metropolis, Peter Behrens and Hans Poelzig realized distinct characteristics. We will walk through these contemporary testimonies along further current insertions of international understanding of architecture since the 1960s, in which living and administration are shown and transformed in a metropolitan way until today.
